Remember our News Exclusive from two weeks ago? Well, I finally got my hands on TransPerfect’s GlobalLink Live, and let me tell you all about it!

I immediately decided to do the thing that any sane person would do with a shiny new toy. Take it for a spin. Now, I don't know about you all, but a point needs to be made that testing modern tech requires modern testing solutions: After seeing the basics of how it works, the only reasonable thing to do was to push it to its absolute limits!

A Safe First Test & Those Impressions

First things first, this B2B translation software is actually designed for business meetings, conferences, and online calls. Truth is, I tested my first round with my sister, a native French speaker over a call to try and keep this first round in as controlled of an environment as I could. I was impressed by the clear, simple UI and the hands-free conversational experience. Despite a few hiccups with long speech gaps (It’ll stumble over itself if you do: like me 😅), it worked smoothly, accurately translating our chat from English to French and back again. We caught up on life, and it was delightful to see the translations flowing seamlessly in real time. The clarity and simplicity of the interface made the whole process feel intuitive and straightforward. All in all, I was pretty impressed with the results. What’s great with speaking a second language in this case is that I was able to verify the outputs myself on the fly, and I just couldn’t help myself from smiling. “It works! it just works!”.

Taking It to the Streets

With the initial test done, I was eager to push GlobalLink Live to its limits. I moved onto the zanier limit testing, going as far away from languages I understand as possible. With a laptop in hand, I headed to a place I knew I could get audio clips of a language that’s notoriously difficult to translate; Mandarin. Off to Chinatown I went.

I wanted to test a completely different context with the same tool to see how generalizable this solution was! After a bit of research on the intersection of AI and Audio, I came across the Cocktail party problem: Unlike human brains, asking AI let alone a PC to focus on one specific audio track in public is a very difficult task.

Aaannnd well… None of my planned experiments ended up happening - my footage corrupted itself during my video exports. So I lost it all.

Let me instead tell you a wonderful story of how the Olympics, and TransPerfect’s product brought two strangers together for an uncanny exchange.

While browsing shops, I struck up a conversation with a shopkeeper who was watching the Olympics on a TV by the cash and was watching a broadcast of the Fencing Team events. After a small exchange in broken English I tried to clarify that I was captivated by the TV because I had fenced in my university years. It was tough. So I eventually headed out and grabbed a cold drink as I headed to my next location for another experiment.

Then it hit me like a ton of bricks 🤦🏽‍♂️ I could have just translated what I was trying to say! A cup of cold tea later, I ran back to the shop, laptop in hand and was able to convey a big thank you to the lady for letting me watch a match in her shop with her!

It was an impromptu chat, the TV was blaring in Manadrin in the background and the stripmall’s security alarm had been set off at one point during out chat, and still this thing (GlobalLink LIVE) performed.

The delays in speech processing were inevitable but overall were manageable to navigate once we got the hang of it.

I asked her impressions on my computer’s Mandarin skills an in short, she told me up front: “This thing is a cut above the other apps on the Google Playstore! Where can I buy this? Is it expensive? “ She went on to say how much she was impressed with the total accuracy of the solution in both directions of the conversation’s translation.

Final Thoughts

What a surreal experience. By the Time I left that lady’s shop, I realized I’d made someone smile by being able to communicate seamlessly. The world feels a lot smaller now, and I can’t believe I got to live something like this in my lifetime rather than seeing it in the Sci-Fi movies I love so much.
